Strategies for Success in College

(SSCL 0099)

Course Outline

 

I.     Course Description

An elective course offered Fall and Spring Semesters, designed to provide the student with opportunities to develop a wide range of coping skills necessary to complete a college education.  Students will receive instruction in career planning, study skills, test-taking skills, stress management, time management, decision-making, etc.  Enrollment in this course is limited to participants of Student Support Services Program.  1-1-1 (institutional credit).

 

II.    Course Purpose

SSCL 0099 is designed to provide essential adjustment experiences that will enable the SSS participants to make an easy transition to the college environment.

 

III.   Course Objectives

1.   To provide an introduction to and awareness of support services and resources (personal development, counseling, advising, and community agencies) on and off campus, along with how and when to use them.

2.   To help students develop a positive attitude and an appreciation for the value of education.

3.   To provide strategies/ideas for developing effective note-taking, study, and listening skills.

4.   To introduce the process of career exploration and planning.

5.   To help students improve their academic, personal, and social development.

 

IV.  Methods of Instruction

The objectives for the course will be achieved by: lectures, class discussions, individual and group exercises, class projects, guest lecturers, student presentations, interviews, library assignments, and other assignments.  A student textbook, Your College Experience:  Strategies for Success, will be given to each student.  Please note that each student is expected to read all assigned chapters and complete the exercises and journals at the end of each chapter.


V.    Attendance

Because this course is designed to be an interactive learning experience, regular and on-time attendance is required.  Attendance will be taken each class period.  Each student is permitted two excused absences.  Any student absent three times or more may not receive credit for the course.  Please see the instructor regarding any absence.

 

VI.  Evaluation

“Strategies for Success in College” is a requirement for participation in Student Support Services.  One hour of institutional credit is earned for successfully passing the course.  The grading system is S-satisfactory and U-unsatisfactory.  To pass the course, students must complete:

 

Written Assignments and/or Projects                60%

Individual and/or Group Presentations            20%

Class Attendance and Participation                   10%

Individual Conferences                                       10%

Please note:  Course Essay Assignment due Wednesday, March 7, 2007.  All other textbook assignments, class projects, résumés, etc. are due on or before Wednesday, April 18, 2007.  Chapter journals (1–16) are due on or before Wednesday, April 25, 2007.  No exceptions!  Individual conferences will take place during Finals Week.
