Advisement Schedule for Completion of Core Curriculum

and Programs of Study in the Division of Business/Social Sciences*

 

Programs of Study, Associates of Arts Degrees: History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology

 

History

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Arts degree in History.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in History. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into almost any major or program at a senior college or university confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  However, the careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include archives, teaching (elementary, secondary, college), government, diplomacy, historic preservation, international business, journalism, law, library or military science, armed forces, and public administration.

 

 

 

Political Science

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Arts degree in Political Science.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in Psychology. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into a baccalaureate program related to psychology at a senior college or university confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  The careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include the fields of education (elementary, secondary and college) and careers for which preparation in psychology at the baccalaureate or graduate levels are required.

 

 

 

 Sociology

 

 

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Arts degree in Sociology.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in Sociology. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into a baccalaureate program related to sociology at a senior college or university confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  The careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include archeology, civil service, education, international trade, foreign service, cultural resource management, planning, sociology, recreation, counseling and military service (intelligence or special forces).

 

 

 

 

* The above schedules are predicated on the presumption that students require no Learning Support prerequisite courses for the selected Program of Study.  Students requiring such courses should complete these before beginning the schedule contained herein.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Programs of Study, Associates of Science Degrees: Business Administration, Criminal Justice, and Education

 

Business Administration

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in Business Administration. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into a baccalaureate program related to business administration confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  The careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include general business and international business,, industrial relations, management and management systems, real estate, marketing, insurance and risk management and international business.

 

 

Criminal Justice

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in Criminal Justice. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into a baccalaureate program related to criminal justice at a senior college or university confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  The careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include judiciary careers at all levels of government such as courts, corrections, probation, parole, law enforcement and private security.

Education

 

The following information provides a recommended schedule for fully completing the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum and course requirements for an Associate of Science degree in Education.  In discussions with one’s advisor, a student might well choose to complete these requirements through another schedule. Students who take courses primarily in the evenings, for example, would need to design a modified schedule in coordination with their advisors. In addition, students completing courses in the summer may elect to modify this schedule accordingly.  The Division of Business/Social Sciences certifies the following as a recommended path guaranteed, once the courses below are successfully completed, to attainment of the core and degree requirements at the Associates level in Education. This schedule makes sense given its alignment with the schedule with which courses contained therein are most frequently offered. Students who complete this program can move into a baccalaureate program related to education at a senior college or university confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will be useful.  The careers and occupations for which this degree provides preparation include careers leading to teacher certification in early childhood education , middle grades education, special education,**  secondary education,**  speech-language pathology education, or health and physical education. Subsequent admission to a teacher education program at a senior college or university in the University System of Georgia requires a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and passing the Reading, Writing and Mathematics portions of the GACE basic skills assessment test.

 

 

 

 

 

** Please note that students choosing the Special Education or Secondary Education have special Area F requirements, explained as follows. Students in the Special Education option have a reduced number of Area F Elective choices.  Specifically, one of the “Area F Electives” in the chart above must be PSYC 2101 if a student is majoring in Education with the Special Education option. In addition, students completing the Secondary Education option must comply with the Area F requirements of the discipline that they intend to teach at the secondary level. Such students will need to take more than the 9 Area F elective hours listed in the chart above and will have to refer to the requirements of the program of study in which they intend to major and teach for further information about their course requirements.
