La primera semana (First Week)

Situaciones

We learned what to say in Spanish in a number of situations.

¿Qué dices en estas situaciones? (What do you say in these situations?)

You want to...

1) welcome a girl or woman, welcome a boy or man, welcome a group of females, welcome a group of males, welcome a mixed group

2) tell an individual to come in (informal), tell a group to come in (Latin America)

3) tell an individual to wait (informal), tell a group to wait (Latin America)

4) thank someone, respond when someone thanks you for something

5) identify yourself, ask someone's name

6) respond appropriately when someone sneezes

Vocabulario

We are learning ways to grow our Spanish vocabulary.

¿Sabes qué significan estas palabras? (Do you know what these words signify/mean?)

1) grupo, masculino, femenino, clase, profesora, estudiantes, lista, plan,  números, identificación

The words above look like English words. We call them cognates. Learning cognates is the fastest/easiest way to grow your vocabulary. You should make a section in your notebook for listing all the cognates you encounter in and out of class.

2)  muchacho, muchacha, hoy, él, ella, tú, usted, yo, nombre

The words above are NOT cognates. You may need to make flash cards to learn them. These are essential vocabulary words that you will hear/use over and over again in this class. Make sure you learn these words PRONTO (right away).

Nombres

(Yo) me llamo                                Mi nombre is                                   (Yo) soy

             _____________.                             ______________.                       _______________.

The three tarjetas de identificación (ID cards/name tags) above show three ways you can identify yourself in Spanish.

If you want to ask someone else's name, you have several options.

For informal situations: ¿Cómo te llamas?  ¿Cuál es tu nombre?  ¿Quién eres?

For formal situations: ¿Cómo se llama usted?  ¿Cuál es su nombre?  ¿Quién es usted?
