Textbook: “Algebra and Trigonometry - A Graphing Approach, 5/e” by Larson/Hostetler. Publisher: Houghton/Mifflin
Materials: It is suggested to have two colors of writing utensils for note taking in class. A scientific calculator is also required (one able to calculate log x and ln x).
Course Objectives: This course includes a study of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; relations; graphs; equations; vectors.
After successful completion the student should:
Prerequisites: MATH 1111 or departmental permission. You should be familiar with exponents, radicals, factoring, complex fractions, and solving different types of equations, functions and inequalities before beginning this course. A review of those topics may be found in appendices A and B of the textbook.
Departmental Attendance Policy:
1. When you have 5 unexcused absences, you may be administratively withdrawn from the course, which may have a negative impact on graduating on time, financial aid, Hope, etc.
Homework: Homework will be assigned using WebAssign. The course code you need is sgc 3651 9727
Grading: You will be given four in-class exams and a final exam. Exams are closed book. Calculators are allowed on exams, but all work must be shown. If you use a calculator to solve a problem you must write down the expression that you enter into the calculator.
Each in-class exam is worth 15% of your grade and the final exam is worth 30% of your grade. Homework will account for 10% of your grade. Grading will be on a ten-point scale.
Test Make-ups: If you want to make up a missed test during the term you must let me know as soon as possible after the test is given to the class and you must complete the make-up before graded tests are returned to the rest of the class. Any test that you miss and do not make up will be given the same grade as the final exam. There will be no make-ups for the fourth test.
Classroom Policy: It is expected that you come to class promptly and conduct yourself in a manner that does not disrupt the learning of your fellow students. Students who engage in unnecessary conversations in class or interrupt proceedings will be required to leave the classroom and may face a disciplinary hearing. With a large class, even though you feel your behavior is not disruptive when added to other small distractions it amounts to a large distraction for other students. ALL electronic devices capable of producing a sound audible to other students must be in silent mode during all class periods. This especially includes cell phones.
Hardship Withdrawals: Hardship withdrawals are granted only when a student has a legitimate hardship related to illness, disabling activities, etc. They cannot be granted for academic reasons. An unsatisfactory grade is not justification for hardship withdrawal. See page 59 of the SGC College Catalog for details.
Special Needs Statement: Students requiring classroom accommodations or modifications because of a documented disability should discuss this need with the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Academic Dishonesty: Academic integrity is expected. Make sure you familiarize with what constitutes academic dishonesty and its consequences as outlined in the student handbook. In particular allowing another student to copy your work is an example of academic dishonesty.
